August 2021

Hello all! Ok, so a ton of good and bad has happened since my last post... Let's start with the good.......Katie, her mom, and the boys went on an epic road trip along the east coast starting in Outerbanks. This trip was generously donated by one of you! So thank you!!!! Before the trip a connection was made with Amanda... Amanda is a friend of a friend's friend x like 25 or so lol... Amanda made a simple request of her community and it grew into something so much more....in Amanda's words.... "Home isn’t a destination or a concrete place - it’s a feeling you have when surrounded by those you love- and I’m so grateful we all opened up our Home to Katie Capiz and her family these past 7 days. It’s been my absolutely pleasure and the most exhausting, yet magical thing, I think I’ve done in my life to be their Cruise Director this week. They still cannot believe everything that has happened and the word “unreal” has taken on a new meaning as it becomes reality. Together we raised over $23k in cash and in-kind donations to celebrate and make lasting memories for this family of strangers. However, once you arrive in our home, you become our family - and Katie, her husband, her mom, her boys and her best friends- are now ours. We were able to pay for an entire dream OBX vacation, pass along funds for cover their entire week stay in DC, offer a private guided tour of the city AND ⛸ Donate $4k cash to a fund to cover the boys Sports activities for the coming year. In this past week, we have prayed together, we have laughed together, we have cried together and we have witnessed that there is something bigger than us here. Thank you from the bottom of MY heart for manifesting the impossible in an act of service and love. We will continue to watch it grow as Katie kicks cancer right in the nuts 🥜 and shows that the word “unreal” applies to Cancer as well. 🖕🏾 She’s got a hell of a lot more LIVIN to do. Xo, Amanda " Can you believe it! They raised $23k in cash/accommodations/day trips!!! They were able to continue on to DC and then NYC for the trip of a lifetime! On to the ugh... Over the past few weeks Katie has been experiencing an increase in negative symptoms such as headaches and dexterity...these symptoms could be from cancer, the new trial medication, or inflammation. Duke has put her on a few medications to help her try to manage them. Yesterday, Katie and her dad were back at Duke for a routine MRI and 3rd infusion. Her results came back unfavorable... Duke is unable to tell without a brain biopsy if the scan shows a dramatic increase in inflammation or a rapid growth in cancer. They advised her to hold off on the 3rd infusion, return home, and call her oncology team at Abbott to schedule an emergency infusion of a medication to decrease the swelling. Duke would plan on rescanning her in 3 weeks to see what the heck is going on and potentially infuse her with the 3rd dose of the trial drug. Sooooo.... things I am asking from all of you.... please pray. In Katie's words "I need a Hail Mary! Lots of them" Next, Katie is open to text messaging but please be patient with her responses...they are mostly one-liners due to her dexterity issues. Lastly, I have opened up the meal train again and donate! Love you all so much and thanks for helping Katie and her family! *Donation note* With regards Katie's Caring Bridge, it's my understanding that some people have mistakenly left a "tribute" donation thinking that it went to Katie when in actuality "tribute" donations go directly to Caring Bridge as a means to fund the site. Hi all, Katie, Dan, and the boys can not thank you enough for all of the delicious meals that have been provided! Going forward, here are a few more of the things that Katie enjoys eating. Spinach would be best for salads. She can have cottage cheese, broccoli, asparagus, cauliflower, Brussel sprouts , tomatoes, avocados. For fruits we enjoy blueberries, raspberries and strawberries. Feel free to incorporate any of the suggested fruits and veggies in meals! Thanks again! Xoxo

Time for an update....

First off, we apologize for keeping everyone in suspense, you wouldn't believe how busy we've been since being discharged. So, it's been almost 4 weeks since the proverbial poo hit the fan, and nearly 3 weeks since Katie had a golf ball size tumor removed from her brain (I still can't believe I'm even writing that). In all honesty you'd never guess she had brain surgery just a few short weeks ago. Katie appears normal as normal could be. But it's not all glitter and unicorns. Although Katie had an excellent surgeon that performed an outstanding surgical procedure, removing all visible traces of the tumor(aka Gwen), the challenge lays within the the genetic makeup of the tumor. We recieved the final pathology report this past Tuesday, which classified Katie's tumor as a Glioblastoma. As part of the continuation of care, Katie will begin her second phase of treatment in a little over a week; radiation and chemo. The positive news is that the therapy is well tolerated, so it shouldn't affect her daily life all that much. BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE! So, it's been a whirlwind of questions, confusion, and frustration over the past weeks, coupled by a lot of prayer. This past Sunday something incredible happened; Katie's friend, Anne, text a link to a web page that outlined the journey of a gal that was diagnosed and treated for the same type of brain tumor. On top of that the situation was similar (young, 4 children, healthy and active). At any rate this gal's story told about her illness, her search for help, and her experience with a treatment which has been so effective that it's placed her in an extraordinary survival category. This woman just so happens to be a family member of a friend of ours, and she and Katie have been put in contact to compare notes, so to speak. The outcome so far is that we found an excellent local oncologist, which is awesome! The other output is that we are visiting with the top neuro-oncologist at Duke University to learn about immunotherapy treatments. Katie and I are hopeful and very excited to learn more about how to battle this thing. Well, that's it for now, and my guess is that we'll post another update Monday evening. We can't thank you enough for all your support, prayers, meals, and encouraging words. Our friends and loved ones are rallying around Katie and our family in a way that makes us feel so humbled and grateful. Everyone has been incredible. We love you all! Katie and Dan
