Posted Nov 29, 2022 by Diana Velasco of Urban Ministries of Wake County

Hello good evening to all, I wanted to let you all know that the Meal calendar is ready for 2023. For all of you that selected find a new meal slot you can access the calendar and view what is available and select your preference! Remember we did remove breakfast for 2023, so you should see only Dinner slots available for 2023. Thank you all for the grace and patience you all have shown. We truly do appreciate all of you! Once again thank you for all that you do and your willingness to serve our community. If anyone has any questions, it would be best to email. We are still in the process of finding someone at the HWC to take over. In the meantime, I'm helping out with the process. Thank you all and God bless! Happy Holidays! October 12 Update

Posted Oct 12, 2022 by Lisa Jones

Good morning HWCW meal providers, Lisa here....and I am glad to be back. As some of you know I have been out for the better part of 3 months with a medical issue and the timing was not ideal. At the exact time I went out we had about 75% new staff starting, closed down our other 2 shelter locations, our volunteer coordinator changed, as well as just began to have meal providers back on site. Truth is you all knew more than staff and unfortunately there was some miscommunication but fortunately as you always have you made sure our ladies were fed and felt the hospitality that only you can. THANK YOU! I'm going to try and answer a few of the repeated questions. As of today, October 12, we have 33 ladies at the shelter. We should be to 36 by the end of the week and will hold between 36 and 40 for the remainder of October and November as we are still social distancing. You as volunteers are not required to clean up after dinner. Staff and guests accomplish that together. We have plenty of condiments on-site for now. Salad dressings, ketchup, croutons (oh boy the croutons)! as well as beverages are plentiful. We won't be able to provide a headcount for dietary restrictions such as vegetarian so as always if you provide a small part of the meal to cover it would be fantastic. Such as you are making meatloaf, mashed potatoes and salad perhaps provide a bit more salad than expected need so a guest may have a salad only dinner. If you have a specific question prior to coming for now please text me at 919-810-6317. Evelyn's role has not been filled and I am working on a staff restructure. You may also send a question via Meal Train. I will try to post updates regularly! Thank you so much for continuing to help us serve the women at the HWCW!

Important News!

Posted Jun 10, 2022 by Diana Velasco of Urban Ministries of Wake County

Meal increase: Reminder, JULY 9th is when we will be serving meals for 40 guests at HWCW. We anticipate staying at this amount throughout the hot summer months. Also, on July 9, groups are welcomed back into the building to serve your already prepared meals. Thank you for your patience with this over the pandemic! Please remember masks will be mandatory. Lastly, I wanted to tell you that Danielle Pernell, UMWC Volunteer Coordinator, will be taking over the coordination of meal donating. All email and meal train addresses will stay the same. As I prepare for my exit from UMWC, I wanted to say that it has been a great pleasure of mine to work with you all. I continue to be impressed with your generosity and support for the HWCW. Thank you! -Meghann Smits **Picture is of the warming trays at HWCW that you will be welcomed to serve from.

April 2022 Update

Posted May 9, 2022 by Diana Velasco of Urban Ministries of Wake County

Good afternoon UMWC Meal Donors! What a fantastic April we had. Welcome to the 4 new meal donor groups who began in April. With your help, a generous 1,200 meals were donated to the guests. Wow! This was the biggest month so far in 2022. THANK YOU! In April, we announced our new Attitude of Gratitude; a volunteer recognition program. We are so excited to recognize our meal donors who donated 12+ meals within 2021 and/or have been partnering with us for 10+ years as our LEGACY Meal Donors!! Our STAR Meal Donors donated 6-11 meals within 2021. Emails were sent out to the groups liaison to identify who was in each group. We are celebrating ALL our meal donors with special stickers! Please make sure you ask the staff for some the next time you drop off your meal. Thank you!! Lisa, Evelyn, and Meghann

The answers you have been waiting for!!

Posted Mar 14, 2022 by Diana Velasco of Urban Ministries of Wake County

Hello, Starting at breakfast on Saturday July 9th, 2022 groups will have the option of serving your premade meals indoors and directly to the women at the HWCW!! The kitchen is not inspected to allow groups to COOK the meals, only SERVE the premade meals through the kitchen. However, we do have warming trays, an ice maker, and a much bigger space than at the old center (pre-covid). Additionally, starting at breakfast on Saturday July 9th, 2022 groups will need to prepare for 40 women instead of the current 30. We anticipate this number growing through the summer and fall. Once the number reaches 55-60, we will be revisiting how groups can sign up to share a meal slot. More details to come. We hope this gives you plenty of time to prepare! Thank you for sticking with us through all the changes throughout the pandemic. We are very lucky to have you part of the team. Thank you, Meghann, Lisa, and Evelyn

Thank you! We have a favor to ask. Please share pictures of your group collecting the groceries, preparing the meals, delivering the meal, and enjoying each other. We understand how some people do not want to be in the picture, and that is ok. We would still love pictures of the food and process. Our development team would like these for our communications. You are welcome to email Meghann with them. Thank you! Please let us know if you have any questions! Meghann, Lisa, and Evelyn

October 2021 Update

Posted Nov 5, 2021 by Diana Velasco of Urban Ministries of Wake County

October was a busy month at the HWCW! Did you notice the new landscaping!? Thank you for the 1,140 meals donated to the guests at Bastion Lane. We are all thankful for your continued generosity. I am excited to welcome the 4 new individuals/groups to our organization. I look forward to working together! Answers to the Top 3 questions from Meal Donors; 1) When can we come indoors to serve meals again? We understand how enjoyable it is to be able to visit with the guests and serve meals. We are hopeful that we will be able to safely return to allowing you to serve meals in April 2022. 2) When will you increase the amount of women staying at HWCW? We do not anticipate the new shelter being at full capacity before April of next year. We are currently under contract to keep operating 3 shelters (for social distancing) through June 2022. So it will remain 30 meals at least until April and quite possibly until July. 3) Did the women like my meal? Yes. It may be difficult to track down specific feedback from the women and evening staff person about a recent meal. However, we can assure you that the women (and staff!) appreciate the meals and we utilize any leftovers that there may be. Please stay healthy this season and do not hesitate to reach out with questions! Thank you, Lisa, Evelyn, and Meghann

May 2021 Update

Posted Jun 9, 2021 by Diana Velasco of Urban Ministries of Wake County

Good Morning to our supportive Meal Donors! Thank you for the 760 meals donated in the month of May to the women at the Helen Wright Center!! Your contribution to our program is appreciated. As there have not been many CDC directed changes in communal living situations, we continue to have a maximum of 20 woman at HWCW on Bastion Ln. This number will not be increasing within the foreseeable future. The next time you drop off a meal, please take a moment to notice the new vegetable gardens that have been installed. We are thrilled to have this addition. We have a few open dates on the June calendar for meals. Please share this opportunity to support our program with other friends and groups. Thank you, Meghann, Lisa, and Evelyn
