Meal Train Update for the Fisher House

Posted Aug 12, 2022 by Khristie Barker of Rocky Mountain Regional VA Fisher House

We are so fortunate to have so many dedicated community members that continue to reach out in regards to meals for our Fisher House guests. Unfortunately, we have not been given the green light to start up the meal train as done in the past. We have been working to come up with some work around solutions which include the following: - Stocking the pantry with easy to cook items (soups, pastas, etc.) - Staff has been cooking a meal, either a casserole or a holiday meal, where the guests can enjoy when they return to the house in the evenings - Celebrating "National" days....for example, last week was National Chocolate Chip Cookie day; we made a variety of cookies for guests to enjoy - Several community groups have purchased pizzas or BBQ from restaurants for our guests to enjoy If your organization is interested in participating through the solutions mentioned above, please contact the Fisher House, either by phone, (720) 723-7683 or email, VHAECHFisherHouse@va.gov. Thank you for your continued support AND patience.

Safe Food Handling Update at the Rocky Mountain Fisher House

Posted Apr 22, 2019 by Sara Morris of Rocky Mountain Fisher House

Please note: Safety is the top priority at the Rocky Mountain Fisher House including food safety. Which is why moving forward we will be providing gloves for all volunteer groups to wear while serving food. Safe Food Handling Guidelines: • Don't work with food if you have any type of illness, such as a cold sore, infected cuts, colds etc. • Purchase all food products (pre-made or requiring further preparation) from a licensed retail establishment that has a valid health permit with the local Health Department. • Thoroughly wash your hands after: touching the face or hair, going to the restroom/smoke break etc. **MUST WEAR GLOVES when handling food.** • Thoroughly wash all raw fruits and vegetables before serving. Unwashed fruit and produce have been the source of many recent food-borne outbreaks. Thoroughly washing these products eliminates this potential risk. • Plus sanitize all utensils (knives, dishware etc.) and preparation surfaces (e.g. cutting board) before and after use. There is a dishwasher at the Fisher House. We appreciate you taking the extra steps when it comes to food safety. Thank you to all of our volunteers!

2019 Calendar

Posted Dec 18, 2018 by Wanda Carter

The message about next year's calendar actually "sent" a little sooner than I was ready....meant just to save it to review and edit later but it sent before I was ready. But on re-reading it today it looks pretty good, except for the last paragraph which should read: Thank you so much for your support and all the delicious meals that have passed through the house in 2018. Please feel free to go ahead and sign up for 2019 dates....I look forward to seeing you all! :)

2019 Calendar Dates

Posted Dec 13, 2018 by Wanda Carter

Hi everyone and Happy Holidays again. Here we are at the end of yet another year...they seem to go so quickly these days it's hard to keep up. May I again express my very deep gratitude and appreciation to you all for your generous support of the Fisher House and our families. The guests are always so appreciative of the meals provided by you...and genuinely surprised and deeply touched by your caring. Please know that your efforts are valued and so very welcomed by all the families who pass through the house. I'm not sure that limiting dinners to only Tuesday and Thursday evenings made a difference in terms of meal attendance, but it seemed to work well for us in terms of food flow. I hope it worked for you all...As I said last year, if it's inconvenient for you/your group to come on a Tuesday or Thursday and you prefer a different day, just give me a call and we can look at arranging a different day for you. And exciting news....as many of you know, we are scheduled to get a new Fisher House and ground breaking will be in the early Spring (Feb/March/April) - dependent on weather and a few other issues, but definitely soon! Construction is scheduled to take 12-18 months (the Fisher House Foundation is building the house so we are confident in the time frame) with a grand-opening in early-mid 2020. The new house will be physically located on the grounds of the new VA hospital and it will be much more convenient for families to come "home" from the hospital for dinner and then return to visit their loved ones if they want after dinner. Hopefully then dinner attendance will swell (be forewarned). I have entered in the 2019 calendar for meals for the next few months, but only through June. There is a possibility that we may be vacating the existing house in July and will be putting families up in local hotels until the new house is ready in 2020. We currently do not have enough information about that to know for sure at this time. I didn't want you all to schedule and make plans and then have to cancel so I'll just let you know as I know and if we stay, will add more dates later. So, here's to another successful year. Again, thank you so much for your support and all the delicious meals that have passed through the house in 2017. Please feel free to go ahead and sign up for your 2018 dates. Looking forward to seeing you soon!

Hi everyone and Happy Holidays. Another year is almost behind us and once again may I express my heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to you all for your generous support of the Fisher House and our families. I know that it can be frustrating at times to prepare meals and fight the traffic to get here to the house in time for dinner only to find no one here to benefit from your hard work. I'm sorry for the disappointment which must naturally accompany these occurrences and can only reiterate that we don't judge the success of a meal by the number of guests who are here at the time of a meal to actually sit at the table and eat together. The food does not go to waste, I assure you. The guests know there are leftovers in the fridge and will often eat when they get home, regardless of the hour. Time and time again, upon check out, the families will mention in their thank you notes how appreciative they are for the "wonderful volunteers" who have provided meals and support during their stay. In an effort to try and improve meal attendance this year however, I am only scheduling dinners on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This way, when families check-in I will let them know that those are the days when dinners are regularly provided; hopefully this may allow them to come home early on those days to join in if they are able. We'll see if it makes any difference. I know some of you prefer other days of the week and if you cannot do T/Th and want a MWF for a particular month, just give me a call and we can arrange it. I have also purposefully left Thanksgiving off the calendar but we're always open to volunteers who want to prepare Thanksgiving dinner....that just requires some direct coordination with me. So, here's to another successful year. Again, thank you so much for your support and all the delicious meals that have passed through the house in 2017. Please feel free to go ahead and sign up for your 2018 dates. Looking forward to seeing you soon!

Denver Fisher House - November dinners

Posted Nov 4, 2016 by Wanda Carter

To all my wonderful supporters! Thank you again for your consistent support of Fisher House and our families. Many families leave messages in their guest books upon check-out about how much they appreciate the meals when they get back to the house at night. We've recently had some work done at the house - new floors and carpeting, but it has not gone smoothly and unfortunately we have had to relocate guests into hotels for the past 3 weeks. I do not anticipate being able to bring families back to the house until - I don't know when. I'll also be on medical leave for the rest of the month and I think coverage will be a little spotty. I have deleted from the calendar the November dates that have not yet been claimed, however those of you who signed up for next week and the following week I would ask that you reschedule for December or next year (although 2017 calendar not yet available). Unfortunately, there will not be anyone at the house and even if there is, there may not be anyone here to let you in (code has changed). I just think it best to cancel out the rest of the month. To Debby and Group - my most sincere apologies for not getting to you in time to cancel for the night you all showed up with dinner in hand and no one was here (my very big bad!). I'm so, so sorry!! If those of you who are scheduled for the next two weeks would please confirm receipt of this message, I'd so appreciate it. Today will be my last day before beginning my leave. I anticipate returning December 5th. Thank you again and Happy Thanksgiving to you all!

Denver Fisher House 2016 MealTrain Calendar

Posted Dec 18, 2015 by Wanda Carter

Hi Everyone. I just wanted to let you know that I have placed the 2016 dates into the mealtrain calendar so feel free to sign up for your "regular" dates if you have any. I wanted to thank you again for your support of Fisher House and our veterans/families/caregivers. I know there have been instances this past year with low house capacity and few people here for dinner at times. I assure you the food does not go to waste and that guests eat when they do get home. Also, I apologize to those of you who have recently had difficulty getting in! We will hopefully be changing our locking system in 2016 and hopefully improving our access situation. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns!

I'm so glad that the Fisher House is here for the Veterans and their families to use. My group enjoys making meals and bring them to share, we love to sit in the dining room with each guest that is staying at the Fisher House. Sometimes they might need us to pray with them as needed. May God Bless each and everyone of you and thank you for letting us be a part of this.
