HALO Summer Fun!

Posted 06/26/2020 by Alayna Howard

Hey, team! We hope you have all been able to remain healthy and happy! I am reaching out today to ask for help providing breakfast and lunch for our kiddos during the first couple weeks of July. Please note that some of these drop-off locations and times will differ from our usual. Please also refer to our updated information sections regarding food preparation and drop-off during COVID-19. Next Thursday, July 2nd, we have an awesome outdoor yoga class planned for our kiddos. We'd love to provide them a light breakfast before getting started so that they have a happy and positive start to their day and plenty of energy for engaging in their yoga practice. This would need to be dropped off at 10:15 AM at the Liberty Memorial Mall. Then, the next week, our Sewing classes will begin! For these classes, we like to provide breakfast at the beginning and lunch at the end. That will be July 6, 7, 13 and 14 with breakfast drop-off by 9:45 AM and lunch drop-off by 11:15 AM. This class will take place in our Learning Center as usual. Please also check out our calendar for additional snack and dinner opportunities in the month of July! You all are the best! We are so thankful for your continued support and we hope to see you again soon. Thank you. Warmest regards, Alayna Howard, KC Program Facilitator

DINNER Needed -- Teaching Teens about Healthy Relationships!

Posted 02/24/2020 by Alayna Howard

Hello, HALO Meal Train! Did you know that February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month? At HALO, we are working to combat teen dating violence by teaching our teenage youth about empathy and healthy relationships, through a program called iEmpathize. iEmpathize helps teens define and utilize empathy, discusses what negative and positive influences in their life look like, and ultimately helps to fight exploitation and human trafficking by teaching teens how to identify healthy relationships and watch out for exploitative people. We are so excited to see the impact this will have on our kiddos. We are hopeful that you can help us by providing a warm meal for the group of teens who will be participating in iEmpathize. Most of these youth are currently experiencing homelessness, and we know that this great program will be even more impactful if we can ensure the kiddos are receiving a good meal while they're with us. This program will be split into four sessions -- March 2, March 4, March 9, and March 11. If you are available to bring dinner any of those nights, please sign up on the calendar. We will likely be seeing a few more kiddos than usual for this program, so the meals will need to be enough to feed 15-18 teens. Thank you! Best, Alayna Howard, KC Program Facilitator

Breakfast Needed Jan. 23

Posted 01/16/2020 by Alayna Howard

Hey there! Thank you for your involvement with HALO's Meal Train! We are posting today because we are in need of breakfast for a class of 12 on Thursday, January 23, to be delivered by 8:45 AM. This group comes from a small alternative high school, and the youth we see in this class are usually facing a different set of challenges than our youth who live in shelters because they have access to fewer resources. HALO provides this group with a safe and creative space, and we always make sure they get to eat as much as they need and can take some leftovers when they leave. Please sign up on the calendar if you are able to provide breakfast for this AWESOME group, and know that we are so appreciative of everyone who sends love and support for our kiddos. Thank you! Warmest Regards, Alayna Howard KC Program Facilitator

Need: Breakfast for Dec. 5!

Posted 11/27/2019 by Alayna Howard

Hey there! HALO wishes you the happiest Thanksgiving! We are posting today because we are in need of breakfast for a class of 12 on Thursday, December 5, to be delivered by 8:45 AM. This group comes from a small alternative high school, and the kiddos we see in this class are usually facing a much different set of challenges than our youth who live in shelters because they have access to fewer resources. Yet they still choose to attend school, continue their education, and come to their art class at HALO. HALO aims to provide this group with a safe and creative space, and we always make sure they get to eat as much as they need and can take some leftovers when they leave. This is one of our most vulnerable groups, and the breakfast they get at HALO is often the only full meal they receive that day. We are humbled by their strength, and would love your help in ensuring that they can start their day right with a nice breakfast. Please sign up on the calendar if you are able to provide this, and know that we are so appreciative of everyone who sends love and support for our children. Thank you, and Happy Thanksgiving! Warmest regards, Alayna Howard, KC Program Facilitator

HALO Workshop Meals, Fall 2019

Posted 09/25/2019 by Alayna Howard

Hey there! Thank you for your participation in The HALO Foundation's Meal Train. We're heading into Fall, and we have a busy semester planned with weekly Writing classes, four weekly Art & Life Skills workshops, and resuming programming with the Fairfax Alternative High School. That means that each week, we have five opportunities to feed our kiddos healthy fuel and offer them the comfort of a full belly. That also means that on select Thursdays in October through December, we'll have a class of at-risk high school students coming in to learn art history and techniques, and we can ensure that those kiddos are getting a good breakfast to start their day. We are endlessly grateful to the people giving us the means to provide our youth with a family who cares for them, and make sure that as long as they're at HALO, they don't have to be hungry. Thank you for everything you do for our children. Best, Alayna Howard, KC Program Facilitator

End of Summer Meal Train Needs!

Posted 08/15/2019 by Nicole Gerken of The HALO Foundation

Hey there! Thanks so much for being part of our HALO family. We had an amazing summer here, we saw 68 new kiddos in the month of July and hosted 28 workshops. So, we are needing to restock some of our snack supplies -- our kiddos love gummy fruit snacks, individually wrapped packs of chips, and microwaveable meals such as ramen noodles that they can take with them when needed. We're also excited to have 5 weekly workshops plus one bi-weekly workshop on our schedule for the fall! That means lots of new opportunities to help us make sure our at-risk kiddos are getting a nice meal while they're with us. As you will see on the schedule, we have opportunities to bring dinner (or a nice snack) Monday and Wednesday evenings, and opportunities to bring breakfast every other Thursday. Thank you for helping us provide the foundation of a family for our youth -- your generosity means the world to them and to us. Please email Alayna Howard with any questions.

Posted 06/13/2019 by Nicole Gerken of The HALO Foundation

Hello! Thank you for being part of the HALO Meal Train. We have now updated our calendar with our needs for this summer. We have a fun summer planned at HALO with a lot of new programming and the addition of several workshops. We'd like to provide snacks at our Creative Writing classes (Monday evenings) and our Art & Life Skills workshops (Monday and Wednesday evenings), as well as breakfast for our Improv classes (Thursday mornings), plus breakfast and lunch during our four-session Sewing Workshop in July. We appreciate people like you who make sure our children don't have to deal with the stress of hunger while they're healing with us. Thank you for all you do to help one more child spend one less day alone.
