Message from Pastor Corey- Sundays are removed
Posted Aug 8, 2022 by Jenny Alvey
I pray that this finds you well. I wanted to update you personally on some changes coming to the Meal Train and to Grace Kids. If you follow me on social media, you know that my District Superintendent has asked me to assist with a church that lost their pastor on an interim basis. Make no mistake, my commitment to Grace Kids remains and my role there has not changed.
However, to facilitate this change, we will be moving our worship from Sundays to Friday evenings for the foreseeable future. What this means, is that we WILL NOT be serving breakfast on Sundays effective immediately. If you are signed up for a Sunday, please make note of this change. Your name will remain on the Meal Train and you will still get notifications, but we will not be serving breakfast. We will however need your support on Friday evenings. We will serve dinner at 6pm, have worship at 6:30 and then have our normal Friday night activities afterwards.
You guys have been amazing blessings to Grace Kids by showing the kids in very real and tangible ways that, "they are loved, they are awesome, and they are never alone." I cannot even begin to tell you how much this has meant to me and the community we serve.
I deeply appreciate your patience and flexibility with us as we navigate this new season.

GRACE KIDS Meal Train is BACK!!!
Posted Apr 19, 2021 by Jenny Alvey
Dear Friends, I am happy to announce that Grace Kids is back open for Sunday Worship!!! With that, we need your help to feed these hungry kids. We are currently at limited capacity with an eye towards ramping back up this summer. Currently we are preparing to serve up to 30 adults and children on Sunday morning. We serve breakfast at 10am and start worship at 10:30. We practice social distancing, frequent hand washing, and have put a barrier up in the kitchen. If you'd like to serve in person, we would love to have you. If you are concerned about the pandemic, we'd certainly welcome dropoffs.
Please consider coming back and joining this incredible ministry. We cannot do it without you and after this past year, we need you more than ever.
Pastor Corey Update
Posted May 18, 2020 by Jenny Alvey
I pray that this finds you all well. I wanted to personally reach out to you to give you an update on Grace Kids. At the beginning of this year, we had more momentum than we’ve ever had. Attendance was up, fundraising was up, we were able to purchase a desperately needed new van, our volunteer base was stronger than it had ever been, the kids were doing some really remarkable things, and the Meal Train was absolutely rolling. And then of course, the Coronavirus happened bringing everything to a screeching halt.
This has been an incredibly difficult time for us all and one of the most difficult aspects of this all has been the uncertainty. When is it safe to return? One of the most important, vital aspects of Grace Kids has been providing a safe space for kids who desperately need safety and security. Obviously, safety can take on many different forms. Prior to the current crisis, the safety we provided was focused on two major areas; environmental and relational. Many of our children come from chaotic environments both in the home and the community, as well as not having a reliable, safe support system. I cannot stress enough the importance we have placed on safety since day one; it really is a foundational aspect of all that we do.
Obviously, the Corona virus has created a new safety concern that none of us were prepared for. Complicating matters even further is that the approach to the virus has become such a contentious matter on the national, political stage. One of the very real struggles of this environment is knowing what to believe out of all the competing voices, especially as it pertains to safety. Complicating matters even further, is again the environmental and relational issues our children face; they simply do not have the support systems to reasonably expect them to take the preventative measures to minimize the spread of this or any virus. (I’ve always joked that Grace Kids is a petri dish of all manner of viruses, bugs, and never before seen ailments.)
Ultimately, this raises the question; how best do we keep the children and youth safe? Secondary, to this, is how do we determine what the greater threat is to those we serve? Is it safer for the kids to risk the virus in order to have the safety that Grace Kids provides? And then one must weigh the potential threat of exposing their already tenuous support system to a highly contagious virus?
To these ends, we have taken measures to insure their environmental/relational safety as best we can. We have maintained close contact with the vast majority of the children and youth through texting and social media. We have also addressed the very real issues of food shortages by partnering with UMC Food to provide 14 shelf stable meals to each and every child and youth every Friday (7 breakfasts and 7 lunches). Over 100 children were served last Friday and 30 adults.
Now, to the really big question on all of our minds across numerous arenas. When do we reopen? We are currently taking guidance not only from the CDC, our local and state governments, but also the Kentucky Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church and Jefferson County Public Schools.
Currently, our plans are to reopen in a very limited fashion in June. What this will consist of is me maintaining regular office hours to be directly available to talk, counsel, and advocate in a very small group environment, while practicing social distancing and the guidelines suggested by the CDC. As to the larger scale reopening of Grace Kids, my current thinking is to continue to follow the guidance of the aforementioned bodies, as well as our Board of Directors. Ideally, we would open when it is deemed safe for JCPS to reopen. It is my sincerest hope that this would be August and this is the wisdom that I am currently operating under.
As to how this pertains to all of you; you are a VITAL part of our ability to serve this at risk population. We would not be able to do what we do and to be as effective as we are without you. Keeping these children fed and providing the opportunity to be able to share a meal together are some of the most important things we do. Even greater than this, is the relationships so many of you have built with the kids. They look forward to seeing you, they are excited when you come, and they know you by name. You are a major part of addressing the environmental and relational shortcomings in their lives. We need you as an organization and the kids need you.
Please stay prepared to jump back in, as you feel safe to do so, as we prepare to ramp back up. We will be flexible in how we do this and will work with you to ensure that you can serve in ways that you feel comfortable in doing so. It is going to be a different world when we get rolling again, but the mission remains the same.
In closing, please know how deeply we and the kids appreciate you and the way that you love and support them. The Meal Train has truly been one of the most miraculous (I don’t use that word lightly) things I’ve been privileged to see. What started out as a means to make sure that they are fed, has become a wonderful means of building life giving and life saving relationships.
Thank you all from the very bottom of my heart and I look forward to seeing you all soon. Do know that I am in prayer for you all.

It is with deep sadness and much reflection that we are going to suspend the Grace Kids meal train until the situation with Corona is over. The safety of our volunteers, staff and children must be top of mind.
Please pray for our children, Pastor Corey, Rickelle and Jocelyn.

Pastor Corey here. I pray that this finds you well. I am writing to you for two reasons. The first, I want to personally thank each and every one of you that have kept our kiddos fed. Without your support and your presence, we absolutely could not do what we do. Feeding these children is a vital part of what we do. Children cannot learn and feel loved when they have empty bellies and you all have kept them fed and loved, so that we can teach and love them. Thank you from the very bottom of our hearts.
Now for the second reason. As we are all aware, we are currently faced with the spread of the Coronavirus. In consultation with our board and our leadership, we have determined that the best, most proactive course of action at present is to suspend all activities inside the building until further notice. We want to be proactive in protecting the children, the community, our volunteers, and our staff. This decision was not made lightly. However, a part of that protection is to ensure as best we can, that we do minimal harm with this decision. The need for meals and food will remain.
We have come up with a plan to make sure the children and their families will continue to be fed. On Mondays through Thursday, we will set up a table outside at 4pm to send home snack bags with the children. On Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays we are asking that you would continue to bring meals to the church as normal. We will meet you there and prepare "take home" containers for the children and their families. During this time and the coming days, these meals are going to be vital for the children. For your safety we will receive the meals and prepare these take home containers with no children in the building. My staff and I will meet them outside and hand out the meals.
Again, we deeply appreciate and need your support. Hopefully and prayerfully, this will only be a short time status and we'll be back in no time to our regular operations. We absolutely detest taking this step, but in the end, we believe it is the best course of action. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 502-909-6295.

February Dates For Saturday Mistake
Posted Jan 13, 2020 by Jenny Alvey
Hi there -
Just noticed that February had Saturday instead of Friday. Just corrected and took off all Saturdays and replaced with Fridays.
If you had signed up for a Saturday in February I am sorry about the mistake. And please look and find a new date. We have tons of open dates in February INCLUDING February 14th for those that are creative and want to do a fun Valentines party for the kiddos!
Thank you all for your continued support of our mission. The results have been nothing short of a miracle.

I want to be careful in how I share this. The purpose of this post isn't meant to be a "oh these poor kids, you all should be ashamed" type of post. That's not how I operate. Our Meal Train has been one of the greatest blessings to our ministry. Not only does it help to insure that the kids get fed, but just as important, it accomplishes two other things.
First, it exposes them to lots of different people and exposes lots of different people to them; it is important to get both sides out of the silos of their respective contexts.
Secondly, it gives me the ability to show them tangible proof that there is an army of people out there that cares about them, prays for them, and wants to spend their time with them. I remind them of this every time a group comes; they need to know that they are never alone. Our kids have tragically low self esteem, tragically low senses of value and worth, and they are made to feel isolated and alone at every turn.
Yesterday morning, no one signed up for the meal train. This isn't a huge deal; we've had several generous friends make donations for times such as this. I got up nice and early and purchased doughnuts, milk, and juice. Not fancy or all that nutritious, but they love it. It's been a while since we've had to do this.
I was shocked and my heart was warmed when I noticed something I had never noticed before. The kids actually come in with an eye towards the kitchen; not for the food, but the people. There was an abundance of doughnut boxes and gallons of milk and juice; there just wasn't any visitors.
Their eyes grew wide as they searched; surely they were there somewhere. The number of kids that came up to Jocelyn and I to ask, "Where's the people?" was truly touching and eye opening. It was proof of something powerful taking place. The food is no doubt important to a legitimately hungry population, but as important to them? The presence of our guests. Let that sink in for a moment; in a church like Grace Kids: A Church for Children, in a context like ours, facing the challenges that our kids face, the PRESENCE of our visitors has become at least as important to them as the sustenance many of them are desperate for.
I think of how far they've come. In the early days, they were wildly distrustful of anyone that came into the church (including me), they were disrespectful to guests, they would "eat and run", come to church to meet up and to run back out into the neighborhood. Many would come because it was a safe place and so that they could take whatever tangible things we might be giving. Now? It rocks their world when our guests do not come. The power and ministry of PRESENCE. I've said many times of myself, "The key is just showing up. God will take care of the rest."
The difficulty of this ministry is ever present; but most of the time, I don't think about it. The past several months, I've had far too much cause to think far too much about it. But glimpses like this? It brings it all back into perspective
