Welcome & Thank You Thank you for providing a warm, nourishing meal to guests at our shelters. Your support meets a basic human need and brings comfort and connection to our community. We have put together a Volunteer Cookbook that contains a wealth of information and recipes that will best support our guests and your volunteer role as a Community Meal Provider. To receive a PDF of our complete Volunteer Cookbook, please send us an email at info@goodsamaritanhaven.org This cookbook is designed to make cooking for a large group simple, clear, and low-stress. We’ve included a set of recipes that: Scale well for 20–35 people (number dependent on site) Are affordable Can be made at home and dropped off ready to serve Travel well Use common household equipment You do not need professional cooking experience. These are the same types of meals families cook every day—just sized up. Some common recipes that our guests love include: mac and cheese, hearty chili with cornbread and salad, chicken and rice casserole with broccoli, beef or veggie taco bar, baked ziti, and many more tasty entrees. What Makes a “Complete Meal” A complete meal typically includes: Main entrée (protein or hearty vegetarian option) Side dish – salad, steamed vegetables, or fruit Bread or starch – rolls, cornbread, pasta, rice Optional dessert – cookies, brownies, fruit We encourage volunteers to pair up if it makes things easier: One person provides the entrée One person brings the sides and bread On the days where we know we don't have volunteers making a full meal, you will be able to select an option to offer the individual meal component.
