Continuing Dinners for Kara and the Boys

Posted Jul 11, 2019 by Jenny Rowland

Hi everyone, I checked in with Kara last week and she mentioned that meal prep/shopping and making dinner for the boys is very difficult to accomplish right now. Kara said that receiving meals for the boys would be very helpful in the next couple of months. In many ways life this summer is more difficult than it was for the family in the spring. I have added meals to the calendar for Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays through July and August for anyone interested in signing up. Meals are for Jared and Jayden. If you are interested in bringing something for Kara, I asked her to provide a list of foods that could be purchased for her her in lieu of a meal. Any of the following foods can be brought to her for her preparation later: -Siete Sea Salt Chips -Coco-Thins (chocolate, sea salt or caramel) -Organic regular nectarines (not white) -organic cherries -organic blueberries -organic strawberries -organic butternut squash -organic kale or organic baby kale -The Brothery chicken bone broth or autoimmune bone broth -Capello's chocolate chip cookie dough (from Jimbo's) -Capello's fettuccine noodles (from Jimbo's) Thanks everyone for continuing to love and support the Boon's!

A Task for You... Yes YOU!

Posted Jun 6, 2019 by Jenny Rowland

Hi everyone, I would like to gather our memories and thoughts about Leon. I would like to ask everyone to send me simple kind thought, a quality you appreciated, a memory or a story about Leon (or as many as you can think of!). This is a quick task that could take as little as 30 seconds, a couple of minutes (or 30 minutes, if you like!). If you are family, a friend, were a co-worker or a neighbor, I would love to have you help me with this project! I really think this is the kindest gift we can give to the family at this time. When you have a moment this week, you can message me in Meal Train, email me at jennyrowland04@yahoo.com or even just shoot me a text at 575-312-9953. Thanks so much for taking the time to help with this endeavor! Jenny Rowland

Thanks Much!

Posted Jun 4, 2019 by Jenny Rowland

Hi everyone, I just wanted to say another thank you to everyone in the last couple of months who have brought meals for Kara and her family. This Meal Train was awesome! Thanks so much for supporting the family in this way. I also want to say another thank you to everyone who has donated funds to the Boons. Together we raised $10,000! Our hope is that this will create a softer place for the Kara and the boys to land in the days ahead. All of your generosity has been amazing. Kara and the boys have made it through this first month since Leon has been gone. We know this has been very tough for Leon's family in the Netherlands as well. Kara, Jayden, Jared and all the family, you remain in our thoughts and prayers. We wish peace, strength and even some joy in the days ahead. We love you!

Special Assignment for You

Posted May 11, 2019 by Jenny Rowland

Now that Leon is here only in our memories and our hearts, I have a special favor to ask of everyone: I would like to gather as many memories, stories and thoughts of Leon as we can possibly gather. If you have a memory, story, kind word or a tale that will make the Boon’s smile, please email it to me and I will create a memory book to give the Boons, from all of us ♥️. If you just have a sentence to share or even a few chapters, it is all welcome and will be greatly appreciated. Every memory we can help keep for Jayden, Jared and the whole family will be a great gift. If you have pictures, please, send those also. All memories can be sent to my email: Jennyrowland04@yahoo.com If a text is easier, text your memories to: 575-312-9953. If we could get at least 1 thought or memory from everyone that would be awesome. Thank you!

Home to Holland

Posted May 11, 2019 by Jenny Rowland

Tomorrow (5/12), Leo, Lenie and Miranda will fly home to Holland. We wish them safe and easy travels the next couple of days. We know this has been such a tough month for you-- you arrived here to be with your son/brother and now are having to return home with him only in your hearts. Our thoughts and our prayers are with your family and all of Leon's extended family back home in the Netherlands. For those that have signed up to bring meals in the days ahead-- thank you so much! We want to continue to support Kara and the boys with meals as they grieve and try to move forward each new day. Beginning tomorrow, meals that are provided will be for Jayden, Jared and Kara.

Beautiful Day

Posted May 11, 2019 by Jenny Rowland

The Celebration Of Leon’s Life was beautiful. It felt so good to have a place where we could gather together to celebrate him, remember him, grieve him, honor him (and even swing a golf club, blow bubbles and share a laugh for him). I wish we could have pushed the continents together so that all of Leon's loved ones in Holland could have been there with us that night as well. We want to say thank you to the Vista Optimist Club for graciously offering us such a beautiful location to gather together. We also want to give a special shout out to Carolyn Bastiste, Matt Capdeville and Holli Clepper for all of their hard work to help make this night possible and so lovely. To our speakers of the evening, Al McCoy, Tim George and Rommel Anacan-- thank you for honoring Leon in this way, your words meant so much. To Leo, Lenie and Miranda Boon, thank you for the beautiful flowers as well as the special Dutch food-- it was fun to try the stroopwafel, gouda cheese and other treats from the Netherlands. To everyone who provided food for the evening-- this was a gift to us all, thank you.

Celebration of Life

Posted May 6, 2019 by Holli Clepper

Hello Everyone, Jenny and I (Holli) are so thankful for the amazing turn out of help for Leon's celebration of life. We are all going through pictures for Leon's special day and they bring such joy and sadness all at the same time. So many aspects of his life touched so many people in beautiful ways. It is unbelievable that he is not here with us anymore in the physical body, but he is here with us in spirit as we plan and grieve and laugh and remember. Thursday will be such a wonderful celebration of Leon's life, and we hope to capture his essence in every part of this celebration. The celebration is very casual, as Leon wanted Kara to have a party to celebrate his life and all that he meant to every one of us. Thank you for all the sign-ups and support. Kara is overwhelmed with gratitude.

Celebration of Life for Leon Boon

Posted May 4, 2019 by Holli Clepper

Leon passed peacefully with Kara by his side May 3rd. He was able to say his goodbyes to his boys and his family. I know it was easier for Leon to let go knowing there was a village left behind to care for his family and keep them safe, well provided for and showered with love. Please help us put on a wonderful celebration of life for Leon Boon. He was such a caring, wonderful man, husband and father and left this earth far too soon. We want to honor him at his celebration of life with good friends, fun music and lots of goodies. Celebration will be at: The Optimist Club 600 Optimist Way, Vista, CA 92083 Thursday May 9th 4pm - 7pm The celebration for Leon's life will be open house style, so guests may drop in and leave as schedules allow. It will be a casual event, as Leon would prefer it to be (and baseball games will be happening in nearby fields). Here is a sign up for food you can bring for the celebration of life as well as suggested donations for the family. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C094DADA62DA6FF2-leon All items can be brought anytime between now and the 9th and left at the RBVLL Snack Bar if you are unable to bring the snacks by 4pm on Thursday the 9th. There are so many costs coming up for Kara and the boys, so a donation box will also be available at the celebration of life. Thank you everyone for everything you have done over the past month, every donation, every meal, prayer and kind word has been much needed and extremely appreciated.

A Tough Day 5/2/19

Posted May 2, 2019 by Jenny Rowland

Yesterday Leon wasn't able to go to his radiation treatment because his oxygen levels were not stable enough for him to be transported. He also was very short of breath and needing more oxygen as well. He was able to visit with Jayden and Jared and do some special crafts with them in the evening. This morning Leon decided that he would prefer to be moved to the Pacifica House, which is a more comfortable space for hospice care. As the day has gone on it has become more difficult for Leon to breathe and the physicians have felt that he is not stable enough to be moved to the Pacifica House. Leon has had his family with him at the hospital throughout the day. Your thoughts are prayers are appreciated at this time as well as allowing the family to have privacy and space during this tough time. To Leon, Kara, Jayden, Jared and the whole family-- please know we love you so very much.

Phenomenal Fundraisers

Posted May 1, 2019 by Jenny Rowland

The fundraisers at Ebullition and Grand Slam Pizza were a big success! Kara said that both fundraisers were really great, she said: "The outpouring of support at the Grand Slam Pizza Event was crazy. People are so generous. Leon is blown away by all the love and support we are receiving. It was a success. The overwhelming support of the community has helped Leon's spirits." She also mentioned that there were many cash donations given at the fundraisers and also a generous donor who agreed to match the amount raised from the Grand Slam night. A big thank you to this special donor! We so appreciate everyone for coming out and supporting these fundraisers, you are so kind. We want to thank the owners and staff of Ebullition and Grand Slam Pizza for their support of these events. We also want to give a special shout out to Holli Clepper and Kathy Hammack for making these fundraisers possible, you are awesome! Leon's back pain has been better controlled the last couple of days at the hospital, so that has been a relief. Two fractures were found on his spine that were caused by the tumors and this is likely what has caused an increase in Leon's back pain. Leon had the first of 10 radiation treatments on his back yesterday. We are hoping that these treatments will decrease his back tumors and increase his comfort.

Lovely Community

Posted Apr 28, 2019 by Jenny Rowland

As I am looking at the calendar for May, I am overwhelmed that it is nearly filled with names of friends (and even some soon to be friends!) of the Boons who are jumping in to support and love this family. I know that the they are enjoying their dinners and they feel so supported by each and every one of you who have provided meals or have contributed to the donations we are raising for the Boons. Together we are creating a lovely community to lift up this family that we care for during this tremendously difficult time in their lives. Thank you for all that you are doing and that you are keeping them in your thoughts and prayers. Leon's sister Miranda will be arriving from Holland tomorrow evening (4/29). We are so glad that she will be here to be with her brother and her parents right now. We hope that she has smooth, easy travels in the next day or so. Yesterday Leon was feeling very uncomfortable when he would sit up and it had become increasingly difficult to move him from his bed to his wheelchair. Last night (4/27) Leon was admitted to the hospital again because of his increased pain and also due to an infection. A CT scan showed that his cancer is growing and he has some compression of his spine. Our hope is that his pain will lessened through the care at the hospital. Leon, Kara and family we love you and we are with you. We want to give a special thanks to everyone that has donated this week and also those that are going to be bringing dinners to the family in the next couple of weeks: Jennifer, Tracy, Shannon, Mette, Kersten, Leah, Wendi, Mimi, Rachel, Jenni and Stacey. We appreciate you all leaving the dinners in the cooler on the porch so that if the Boon's are not home yet or if they are resting, they can bring the dinner in when they are ready. This is working out well, we appreciate it.

Meal Train rented this van for the Boons!

Posted Apr 26, 2019 by Jenny Rowland

We want to give a BIG thank you to all of our Meal Train Donors! You were able to rent this van for the Boons and it arrived at a time when they really needed it so very much. It has become increasingly difficult for Leon to move from his wheelchair to another chair or his bed. This week he has been unable to walk and also not able to stand when moves from one location to another. Each time Leon moves, it is very painful and takes a great deal of support from others. When Leon has a radiation treatment or doctor's appointment, it might require several moves: from his bed to his wheelchair, to the car, back to the wheelchair, to an exam table, back to the wheelchair, back to the car and back to the wheelchair again. It has been super tough! This van will allow Leon just to get into his wheelchair and then he can just roll right into the van. Then Leon can safely ride in the van while seated in his wheelchair. It will save him several transfers from his wheelchair to other seats and it will help him be much more comfortable. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to all of our generous donors for providing this gift to the family!

Hopes For Home

Posted Apr 20, 2019 by Jenny Rowland

Lots of home health supplies have been ordered and should be delivered today so that Leon may be discharged from the hospital. Leon does not have feeling in his legs or feet and so he is mostly using the wheelchair to get around. Kara and Leon have been working with PT/OT to practice transferring from the wheelchair to a chair or bed so that they will be ready to do this at home. It will be a big adjustment to not have doctors and nurses there to help, but it will be really nice for Leon to be home with his loved ones. We hope Leon can go home today and that it is a smooth transition for Kara, Leon and the family. Kara, Leon and all of the family, we are thinking of you today!

Enjoying The Sunshine

Posted Apr 19, 2019 by Jenny Rowland

Leon and Kara were outdoors enjoying some sunshine yesterday afternoon. Leon is going to be having 3 more radiation treatments on his wrist. One will be today and then he will have treatments on Monday and Tuesday of next week (4/22 & 4/23). Yesterday morning Leon did not feel well. He was able to eat and drink a bit and then felt stronger in the afternoon. He was motivated and did a great job working with PT and OT. Nice work Leon! The hospital and family are working on setting up home health and are hoping that Leon may be able to go home soon. We want to give a special thanks to everyone who has signed up to bring dinners. All of the dates for April are full now, you are all amazing! Special thanks to Kate, Jana, Chris, Adria, Shanna and River for signing up today :).

Feeling The Love

Posted Apr 18, 2019 by Jenny Rowland

First off, we want to let you know that the Boons are feeling so much love and support from everyone. It is really holding them up during this dark and stressful time in their lives. Thank you for everything you are doing to lift up the family-- they love and appreciate you so much. Special thanks to Kelly, Julie, Renee, Amy, Tracy and Jennifer for signing up to bring meals to the Boon's this month, you are rockstars! Leon did receive the intrathecal chemotherapy on Tuesday 4/16 (chemotherapy that went directly into his spinal fluid instead of his bloodstream). When Leon had the lumbar puncture on 4/8, it did show abnormal cells in his spinal fluid and the diagnosis for that was leptomeningeal carcinomatosis. This means that Leon has cancer cells in the meninges which is the lining of his brain and spinal cord. The intrathecal chemotherapy could directly affect the leptomeningeal cancer and that could help to decrease the neurological symptoms that he will have. Yesterday the doctor discussed the plan of care for Leon and right now the plan is to wait to see how his body responds to the chemotherapy. Currently they are holding off on more radiation because he has been given the intrathecal chemotherapy and those treatments are not done together at the same time. Doing another spinal surgery is another option to help Leon maintain function and feeling in his legs. It appears that the tumors that were removed in his spine on 4/3 are coming back and are possibly more advanced than they were when they were last removed. Currently Leon would prefer not to have another surgery, especially if it doesn't seem to have a long term benefit. It is still be an option for Leon to consider as it could alleviate his neurological symptoms. Thanks again for all of your love, support, positive thoughts and prayers. The family is very thankful for everything.

2 Weeks

Posted Apr 16, 2019 by Jenny Rowland

Leon was first admitted to the hospital 2 weeks ago today (4/2). Kara and Leon's parents are continuing to spend each day with him at the hospital. Kara's parents are visiting Leon when they can as well as taking care of the boys at home during the day. This month has been difficult and everyone in the family has been working hard to keep things running at home while trying to process all that is changing in Leon's life, as well as their own. We want to say thank you to everyone who is supporting the family with donations and meals. It helps so much! The oncologist is recommending that Leon get intrathecal chemotherapy which is chemotherapy that would go directly into his spinal fluid instead of into his bloodstream (in addition to the other chemotherapy he is receiving). Kara and Leon are considering this treatment and learning about the possible pros/cons of it as well. Leon is having increased numbness in his legs which moves from his toes and feet up his legs to the level of his hips. He also is dealing with abdominal discomfort each day. It has been nice for the family to take Leon outside (most days) to the garden area of the hospital for some sunshine and fresh air. This has been an uplifting part of their day.

Leon's parent are here!

Posted Apr 14, 2019 by Jenny Rowland

Leon's parents arrived from Holland last night. We bet they are weary from their travel, but we are so glad they are here! Their presence will be a great support to Leon, Kara and the family. Welcome Leo and Lenie Boon! Leon has been continuing to get chemotherapy treatments this week. The treatments make him feel tired and he has also had nausea with them, despite the anti-nausea medications he is being given as well. Leon has become a bit more short of breath and coughing and he is on a small amount of oxygen to help keep his oxygen levels up. Leon gets to go outside on occasion and it lifts his spirits to be out in the sunshine.

First day of chemotherapy

Posted Apr 11, 2019 by Jenny Rowland

On Tuesday 4/9, Leon and Kara went to Scripps MD Anderson Cancer Center in San Diego. Leon had had radiation mapping done. He also had his first radiation treatment done on his wrist. Today, Thursday 4/11, Leon is going to have his first chemotherapy treatment. He is also having a port put in today. This is a device that medications and chemotherapy can go into his body through and also blood tests can be drawn from. Our hope with the port is that it will save him from having to get poked with a needle every time he needs blood tests or medications given. We hope it will help him be a little bit more comfortable.
